Charles N'Zogbia

Charles N'Zogbia began as a youth player at Le Havre. When he was 17 he was spotted by Newcastle scout Charlie Woods who invited him for a months trial at St James Park, his performances convinced the club to offer him a full contract.

Le Havre were unhappy about this transfer as they claimed to have Charles tied to an educational contract and tried to appeal to move, but Newcastle claimed he had the freedom to join whatever club he wishes. A claim which FIFA back and a fee was set by a tribunal.

N'Zogbia is officially the last player to be signed under the reign of Sir Bobby Robson before he was sacked in early September, although he never played for Robson. John Carver was in caretaker charge when Charles made his debut against Blackburn Rovers.

Robson later spoke on N'Zogbia: "N'Zogbia could go to the very top with the right coaching and motivation, and I hope it is with Newcastle. I signed him as a teenager and he was one of the most naturally gifted players of that age I'd ever seen."

Due to inuries N'Zogbia was thrust immediately into first team action and became an instant hit with the Newcastle fans. In the 2005-2006 season he quickly established himself a regular with 41 appearances and became the hero of Michael Owen's debut when he scored the equaliser with a curling free kick. He further displayed his goalscoring ability towards the end of that season with a brilliant individual goal against Sunderland, his contributions that season also included 7 assists.

Charles found himself playing less regularly the next season with the arrival of Damien Duff and his future at the club was thrown into doubt on the final game when he refused to be a substitute against Watford. However, a new manager, Sam Allardyce was appointed and kept N'Zogbia on at the club.

Charles scored the first goal of Sam Allardyce's reign with a free kick in a 3-1 over Bolton Wanderers, although in this game he featured at left back instead of his usual left midfield. With injuries to Celestine Babayaro, Charles played most of the 2007/2008 season at left back and formed a good understanding with left midfielder Damien Duff.
