Stephen Carr

Stephen Carr signed for Tottenham Hotspur after a successful trial, he trialed with Tottenham after being rejected by their North London rivals Arsenal. He was signed up by then manager and former Toon boss, Ossie Ardiles, and debuted on September 29th 1993 against Ipswich Town but he had to wait in 1996-1997 to establish himself as a first team regular.

Carr picked up a Carling Cup medal in 1999 when he was part of the Spurs side that defeated Leicester City 1-0 at Wembley. The following year was Carr's best ever in terms of performances, he even scored a 35 yard screamer against Manchester United.

In 2001 Carr suffered from a knee and required an operation, this forced him to miss the 2001-02 season entirely and the 2002 World Cup and Japan and South Korea. It was not until October 2003 that Carr would make a full recovery. But Carr would return to form and skipper the club leading to interest from other clubs.

Manchester United expressed their interest in Carr but it was Newcastle who won his signature for £2million. Soon after he was signed manager Bobby Robson was sacked, but under Graeme Souness, Carr found himself a regular starter. He debuted in the 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough, infamous for the later equaliser courtesy of the hand of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

During September it was a goal from Carr that ended Newcastle's jinx on the South Coast. Newcastle had not won an away league tie at Southampton in 32 years, but this was soon laid to rest when Carr's 30 yard effort nestled into the back of the net. He played 26 games during his first season.

He only managed 19 games the following season as a persistant knee injury continued to sideline him.

Carr has suffered some abuse during his time at Newcastle, many fans laying Carr to blame for goal conceded, particularly during a 2-1 defeat to Bolton Wanderers in October 2006.
