Kit History

Newcastle United are most commonly familiar with the colour of black and white and throughout the history of the club, it has mostly worn black and white stripes.  However, originally Newcastle United wore a red and white striped shirt.

Newcastle originally wore red and white after the merging of Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End into Newcastle United.  The colours of red and white were worn by the defunct East End club.  However at this time, red and white were very popular kit colours with a lot of clubs and this lead to frequent kit clashes.  In 1904 Newcastle United decided to change its colours from red and white, to black and white, and this has been the club colours ever since.

The red and white stripes would later represent the colours of North East rivals Sunderland.

While Newcastle kept the black and white as the main colours, their away kit has never had a set colour and Newcastle have been seen to wear change kits in many different colours.

During the 1970's and 1980's the change kit was mainly yellow and green, similar to the home shirt of Norwich City.  During the early 1990's the kit colour changed and Newcastle wore a blue change strip.  In the 1995-1996 season the club switched to a maroon and blue colour, but after one season returned to a blue change strip.

In the 2005/2006 season Newcastle wore a green change strip, it was a striped shirt with a light and a dark shade of green.

Newcastle switched back to the maroon and blue colours for the 2006/2007 season.

As well as a change strip, Newcastle have also produce kits designed specially for use during kit clashes in European games, these kits have been in the colours of silver, gold and most recently a light blue colour.

For the 2007-2008 season, Newcastle have moved to a light blue away kit
