Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer joined Newcastle United in the summer of 1996. Then playing for Blackburn Rovers, for whom he won the Premier League with one year previous.Blackburn Rovers received an approach for Shearer from Manchester United but Shearer rejected the offer to join Newcastle, currently managed by his boy hood hero Kevin Keegan. Newcastle paid £15,000,000 (then a world record fee) to bring Shearer home and in his first season he scored 25 times in 31 games, also earning him a PFA Player of the Year award.

The following season did not start so well for Shearer when he suffered a broken ankle in a pre season tournament at Everton's Goodison Park. Shearer returned mid season and and would help fire Newcastle into the final and go the only goal in the semi final against Sheffield United, but in the final Shearer hit the post and Newcastle were defeated 2-0 by Arsenal. Also in that season controversy struck when Shearer kicked Neil Lennon in the head. Shearer stated that this was purely accidental and denied he had threatened to walk out of the world cup 98 squad if punished. He was not punished and went on to captain England at the World Cup.

Shearer's Newcastle career almost came to an early end in 1999 when he was dropped by manager Ruud Gullit for Tyne-Wear derby in which Newcastle lost 2-1 to Sunderland. Ruud Gullit quit just days later, had Newcastle won he would have stayed and Shearer might have been sold.

In 2000 Shearer retired from international football to concentrate on his club career, despite numerous calls for his return he rejected them all and in 2002 he would score twice at Ewood Park and Newcastle gained a 2-2 which secured their passage to the Champions League.

Shearer enjoyed a good campaign with Newcastle furing 2002-03, helping Newcastle reach the last 16 of the Champions League. In the opening match of the second group phase against Inter Milan, the referee failed to send off Shearer for an elbow into the face of Fabio Cannavaro but his actions still landed him with a two match ban from UEFA. On his return from suspension he scored a first half hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen and then netted two more at the San Siro but defeat to Barcelona in the final game saw Newcastle eliminated. In the league, Shearer would score what was he personal best goal ever against Everton and helped Newcastle to 3rd place.

In 2004-2005 Shearer announce that he would retire from football when the season had finished but influenced by manager Graeme Souness, he was persuaded to stay on for one more year to attempt to beat Jackie Milburns goalscoring record. On 4th February 2006, Shearer scored in a 2-0 win over Portsmouth at St.James' Park, and it was this goal that broke Jackie Milburns great goalscoring record of 200, although some sources say that including games played during world war II, MIlburn actually scored 238 goals. Shearer had scored 2006 by the time he picked up a kneee injury playing against Sunderland, this ending his career three games early.

On 11th May 2006 Shearer came back for a testimonial match. Guest Newcastle players included Steve Watson, Rob Lee, gary Speed and Les Ferdinand. Shearer was unable to play because of injury but he did initiate the kick off and came on as a substitute to score a last minute penalty. Shearer donated all the procedes of his testimonial (estimately £1,000,000) to charity.
