Bobby Moncur

Bobby Moncur made his full league debut for Newcastle in a match against Luton Town in 1963, he was 18 years old. Moncur was seen as a late developer and as a result he was almost sold to Norwich City for £25,000 but the deal fell through. Bobby became more determined and eventually earnt the number six shirt. He was to form a solid partnership with John McNamee and was made team captain for the first time in 1968 in a game against Arsenal and Newcastle went on to qualify for Europe at the end of the season.

In 1969, Moncur led Newcastle to the final of the UEFA Fairs cup, now known as the UEFA Cup, and back then the final was over two legs. Over those two legs Bobby Moncur scored three times, the only three goals of his entire career, and Newcastle beat Hungarian opposition Ujpesti Dozsa to win the competition. The route to the final saw Newcastle elminate such competition like Feyenoord, Rangers and Sporting Club of Portugal. Manager Joe Harvey, the same man who almost sold Moncur would later describe him as the supreme sweeper and a valuable asset to both Newcastle United and Scotland. The Fairs Cup win makes Bobby currently the last Newcastle captain ever to life major silverware.

Bobby Moncur played a total of 296 games for Newcastle before his transfer to Sunderland in 1974. He is remembered for being one of Uniteds greatest ever captains, a strong tackling centre back, commanding in the air.

Following the Fairs Cup triumph of 1969, Moncur commented " At the time I didn't realise how important Europe was to the fans. It was only afterwards when I looked back at events and thought of the fever it brought to the area. I suppose supporters had been waiting for something to happen for a long time and the Fairs Cup was it".

Today Bobby Moncur makes frequent appearances on Sky TV as a football pundit and is also a commentator on Newcastle United matches for Gateshead based radio station CenturyFM.
