Joe Harvey
Joe Harvey was Newcastle United through and through, he spent almost his whole career on Tyneside as both a player and a manager. To this day Joe Harvey is the longest serving club captain, longest serving manager and the last manager to win major silverware when his Newcastle side lifted the UEFA Fairs Cup back in 1969. As a player he was quick to establish himself in a young Newcastle team and began to settle into a half back position. Harvey was an authoritive figure who had the respect of all of his team mates, but his time was not without controversy.
IN 1946-1947 he was suspended by the club, along with team mate Len Shackleton for going on strike against the quality of accommodation the club was providing. Both Harvey and Shackleton would be forced to make a public apology. Harvey was also suspected to be involved with illegally selling tickets to the 1952 FA Cup final, but this was proved. On the field in 1947-48 he was a major part of the team as they won promotion to Division One, he only missed five games throughout the whole campaign. He captained the club to two FA Cup wins in 1951 and 1952 and retired in
May 1953, aged 34..
However, Harvey still remained in football and began coaching the game. He started working as a coach for Newcastle but left for managerial spells at Barrow and Workington. In 1958, he was unsuccessful in an application to become the new Newcastle manager, losing out to Charlie Mitten. However, when the club were relegated from Divison One in 1962 the position opened up again.
Harvey rejoined Newcastle and led them back to the top division in 1965 with players such as Wyn Davies, Bobby Moncur and Terry Hibbitt and transformed Newcastle into a major English force once again.
In 1969, Joe Harvey led Newcastle to victory in the UEFA Fairs Cup, (now UEFA Cup), this is still the last major piece of silverware the club has won,. Harvey was also responsible for bringing one of Newcastles greatest ever players to Tyenside when he signed Malcolm MacDonald in 1971. With SuperMac he guided the team to the 1974 FA Cup final but lost out to Liverpool.
Harvey resigned as manager in 1975 after mounting supporter pressure as he had not reached the very top with the club. Ironically a few years later when results were suffering, the same fans called for Harvey to return as manager.
In 1989 he died suddenly of a heart attack, he was 70 years old and had spent most of those years with Newcastle United and Football.
